Assistive Technology, Equipment and Aids

Our team supports individuals to participate more independently and confidently in everyday life. Whether the goal is improving daily living skills, enhancing communication, increasing mobility, or accessing education, work, and community activities — assistive technology can help reduce barriers and create new opportunities.

Assistive technology is a term used to describe equipment, devices, or supports that improve functioning, safety, independence, and participation. This may include physical supports, environmental modifications, or communication tools that help individuals engage more fully in the environments that matter most to them.

We follow a structured, collaborative process to ensure assistive technology and communication supports are safe, appropriate, and effective in everyday life.

1. Understanding needs and goals

We work with individuals and families to understand daily routines, environments, communication needs, and functional goals across home, school, and community settings.

2. Assessment

A comprehensive assessment helps us understand abilities, participation, and support needs. This may include functional skills, communication, cognitive, sensory, and motor considerations, and environmental factors. We collaborate with families and other professionals to build a complete picture.

3. Exploring options and trials

We identify suitable equipment or communication systems and arrange trials where appropriate. Trials allow different options to be tested in real-life settings to determine what works best.

4. Clinical recommendation and funding support

If supports are recommended, we prepare documentation outlining assessment findings, trial outcomes, and clinical reasoning. For NDIS participants, this may be used to support funding requests depending on the cost and complexity of the support.

5. Implementation and training

Once approved or selected, we support setup, introduction, and safe use. Training is provided for individuals, families, and key supports to ensure equipment or communication systems are used confidently and effectively.

6. Ongoing Review and Support

We acknowledge that needs can change over time. We monitor outcomes, adjust supports, and review progress to ensure assistive technology or AAC continues to support participation and independence.

Our goal is to help individuals access the right supports to communicate, participate, and live more independently.
